It's exciting to be introduced to a "new" Ghost Rider, not least because his steed is so imposing.

Presumably, he'll seek out his own time's Ghost Rider in an attempt to figure out how to return to the twenty-first century, given he has a vendetta against the dark sorcerer Kulan Gath in this time. Somehow, when Conan attacks Ghost Rider while the supernatural hero is attempting to use his penance stare, it results in some kind of time warp, with Conan transported back to Aquilonia. The issue doesn't reveal much about this prehistoric Ghost Rider, but it's likely the character will be fleshed out substantially in Savage Avengers #22 - not least because the cover shows Ghost Rider astride his giant spider. Most striking of all, though, this Ghost Rider was atop a giant spider reminiscent of Lord of the Rings' Shelob, or Harry Potter's Aragog. Conan had been hired to assassinate a mad king, but instead he found himself simply watching as this ancient Ghost Rider laid waste to the king's armies and slew his target. To Ghost Rider's surprise, Conan actually recognizes him, having seen one of his ancestors during the Hyborian Age. Savage Avengers #21 sees Conan the Barbarian and Ghost Rider cross paths with one another, and of course they start out with Marvel's traditional superhero misunderstanding brawl. While writer Jason Aaron's Ghost Ridertenure hugely expanded the lore and history of the hero, one version fans haven't seen before is the Ghost Rider of Conan the Barbarian's Hyborian Age, as revealed in Savage Avengers #21 by Gerry Duggan and Patch Zircher. Existing some 10,000 years ago, this Ghost Rider was born before the invention of automobiles like the Hell Charger of the modern Rider, instead choosing a mount that brings to mind one of the creepiest monsters in Lord of the Rings. The first Ghost Rider rode a woolly mammoth, and he was actually part of the first iteration of the Avengers, serving alongside the likes of Odin the All-Father and Earth's first Phoenix host. For over 1,000,000 years, human beings have been transformed into Ghost Riders, driven to serve the Spirit of Vengeance. Marvel's latest Ghost Rider has a horrifying mount straight out of Lord of the Rings. Warning: this article contains spoilers for Savage Avengers #21!
